Florence (Italian: Firenze) is only a small city on the banks of the Arno River in Italy. The capital of Tuscany, it is easily most famous for being the focal point and home of the Renaissance period of history (late 15th through 17th centuries).

During this time the city was home to the likes of Leonardo Da Vinci, Machiavelli,Michelangelo, Donatello, Botticelli, Lippi and many, many more.

History, art, and culture all combine in almost everything you can see and touch but these days the city is also well know for it fantastic food, shopping and nightlife.

  1. for the ladies or any other shoppers wanting authentic designer goods (NOT the stuff off the streets!)....you may not have the time on a contiki tour, but if you really want great deals on italian and other designers (gucci, fendi, ysl, burberry), you should make a trip to THE MALL. it’s a designer outlet about 30 min from florence (take a train from santa maria novella to rignano sull arno). you will get AWESOME deals on designer goods ($1000 bags for $300). of course, i would never suggest to miss the beauty that is florence, but if you have the time or are lucky enough to visit twice, it’s definitely worth it.
