Hidden amongst the mountains, palm trees and tropical forest along the banks of the Mekong River is the former capital of Laos – Luang Prabang. This small town is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is perhaps most famous for its beautiful houses, temples and buildings. The colourful architecture creates a unique feel to the town while the large number of Buddhist monks who live in the city also adds to its appeal.
Because the city was the capital of Laos up until 1975 and home to the Royal Family of Laos, there is a great deal of gold to be found on and in the town’s temples as well as in the former Royal Palace, the most famous and revered piece being a 1900 year old 83cm (32 inch) tall Buddha statue reputed to be around 90% pure gold.
Just outside Luang Prabang along the river are the Tam Ting Caves – two caves where locals have carved and placed over 4,000 statues of Buddha. A visit to the caves is a must for anyone who travels to Luang Prabang and is included as part of tours that visit Laos.
Visitors to the town also have the opportunity to go kayaking or hike to nearby waterfalls.
