Widely proclaimed as one of the most beautiful squares in the world, St Marks Square in Venice it is often packed with tourists and pigeons alike but like much of Itlay, the beauty of it all leaves a lasting impression on many European travelers.
The Basilica of St Mark, on the edge of the square, is adorned with beautiful gold mosaics and domes and is free to visit as long as you are wearing church dress.

The 96 meter high Campanile is the bell tower for the Basilica and presides over the square. Fortunately there is an elevator all the way to the top of the tower as it provides a great view of the whole island.

Also on on the edge of the St Mark’s Square is the Doges Palace – the old administration center of the Venetian Republic. This palatial building is filled with impressive rooms, art and history and the entry price also allows you to walk across the Bridge of Sighs and into the old prison.
