What to pack for travel to other parts of the world

The following is a suggested packing list for a Europe summer tour.
People are individuals though and often have personal preferences and opinions as to what to bring. The following then is not a definitive list, but should give you a good guide as to what you should pack for your European tour.
Clothes
- 1 rainproof jacket/small umbrella
- 2 or 3 shorts/skirts
- 1 thick sweater
- 1 or 2 Swimwear and beach towel
- 1 or 2 pairs of jeans
- 2 or 3 T-shirts
- Underwear (lots)
- Socks (lots)
- 2 or 3 casual shirts
- Trousers
- Dresses
- 1 set of smart clothes (eg going out dress, tie, blazer, jacket or suit for evenings out on tour)
Shoes
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Thongs/flipflops/sandals
- ‘Going out’ shoes
Toiletries
- Toiletry bag and contents
- Aspirins/medications
- Suntan lotion
- Handkerchiefs/tissues
- Insect repellent
Miscellaneous
- Travel Clock
- Sunglasses
- Plastic bags
- Washing powder
- Sewing kit
- Pens and writing materials
- Rechargeable phone card
- Power adapters
- Day bag
- Overnight bag
Label your suitcase inside and out with your name and your home address and perhaps attach a sticker, ribbon, patch or other unique identifier to your luggage to make it easier to spot.
Carry a copy of your passport, visas, travel and other important documents as well as your travellers cheque numbers (if you use them) with you in your luggage. You should also leave a copy of all this information at home with someone trusted and contactable while you are away.
Don’t pack your travel documents and passport in your luggage, rather take it with you in your carry luggage.
Remember to bring more than enough of any medication you might need along with you and carry prescriptions for any medications that you carry with you.
Camping and Concept/Budget Tours
If you are traveling on a Camping or Concept/Budget Tour you should also pack:
- Towel – perhaps a quick dry towel if you like to shower on the departure mornings so you won’t have to pack a wet towel in your luggage
- Sleeping bag
- Toilet tissue
- Flashlight
Laundry Facilities

Hi there,
I have been reading some tour guide books about what to pack. The Rick Steve’s book says that most women in Europe don’t wear shorts/shorter skirts. Because he is older, I am not sure how outdated this statement is.
Does anyone have any advice who has been to Europe recently? Do younger women wear shorts/shorter skirts?
Thanks!

I’ve added in some Egypt-specific packing info and linked to it from the top of this page…you don’t have to cover up in Egypt if you don’t want to, it’s considered a little culturally insensitive if you run around in mini-skirts and mid-rifts though. Long, light, airy clothes like long skirts, sarongs, capri’s etc that cover at least your knees are a good start….see the packing list for more info as well as some pics of people on tour in Egypt.

This is a reply to what AllieGenius wrote about Contiki being one long party, with no real culture.
I just wanted to say that with Contiki you get to choose the amount of cultural experiences you want, and if all you want to do is party, then you can do that too. With loads of free time, and optional excursions, you get to do it all.
On my European Highlights tour, I did all the touristy things I wanted to, but some of my most memorable moments were just hanging with locals having a beer, or great meal, and swapping stories.

as someone else said in another one of the threads on this site, take what you have packed and then divide it by two. The less you have to carry the better off you are. Hell, i moved to live in England with one rucksack!
BTW, watch out for the pickpockets at the major tourist traps in France – some of them are unbelievably good!

When I went to Europe this past summer I had trash bag, the bigger ones, and used them to separate my dirty clothes from my clean clothes in my suitcase and I would also suggest putting some Febreze in a small spray bottle to keep your clothes smelling fresh.

the only thing i would have to say to bring that isn’t on the list is sunscreen and locks to lock up your bags while traveling.

Allie, it depends on which tour you go on. When I went to Egypt, the people were mid 20’s to 35. I think it’s because of the nature of the tour. However, from what I’ve experienced, going in the summer and doing the ton of countries at once with the long trips tend to be just out of high school kids (younger set).
As far as one big long party – to each their own. Some of the people stay up all night partying. Others of us are more tempered, came for the culture of the day time – and chose to get some sleep to be ready for the events planned on the tour.

I was curious… Someone I know went with contiki recently and said it was just one big long party with not much culture involved… is that true?

I took a quick dry towel, it did dry quick (less of an issue with smelling), but it doesn’t absorb as much water as a regular towel. If you’re picky about a towel, bring an old thin one from home and throw it out at the end of the tour.

Yeah, good call. Although I would say no to the suit/blazer/tie idea. Nice pair of pants and a shirt are more then enough. A nice suit might get ruined. The nights you dress up a little tend to be the nights you’ll get drunker then usual.

If you are doing a time out tour (staying in hotels), a travel iron/hairdryer will come in handy as many european hotels do not provide these facilities.
